Bloom Where You're Planted:
a women's retreat

We held our circle around a roaring fire, since Tucson was being blown and drenched in a blessed rain after months of drought. We introduced ourselves using a childhood photo and began by considering where we had been planted.

Have you ever looked at your life from above, through the lens of the eagle, assuming that your soul picked your race, gender, time of birth, parents and situations? You might try thinking now about what the advantages have been and what lessons you've learned just because of your economic class or your family's gifts and wounds.

We did a meditation to connect us to the soil, to Mother Earth, and to the sacred feminine that holds us in her womb, nourishes us and keeps us "in the dark" until we are ready. Then we imagined ourselves as seeds in that earth, with the impulse to send out roots, than stalks then buds that unfolded into petals. We saw how each part of the cycle was important, even the part where the petals wither and return to the earth, leaving seeds as our legacy.

We consulted the inner children in our photos about how they viewed our lives now. What would the 7-year-old you say about what delights her about your life? What disappoints her? What is she wondering if you remember? What would she ask you to do about your blooming?

We went into my bedroom and spread out the collection of hats we had assembled together. As we tried them on, we watched ourselves and each other to see which hats made us light up, which ones brought out an energy or quality we hadn't seen before. We tried on silly, elegant, sporty, masculine, prim. Each of us decided on The Hat for now, the one that brought out the kind of blooming impulse we were welcoming. We wore those hats to a delicious catered lunch.

Then we each picked a Sand Spirit to be an ally for our blooming and did some work dialoguing with the image on our card. One by one the participants began to "break through" the soil, bringing something to light that had been buried or hidden. Each "aha" was different. Then we did a shamanic journey to the upper worlds to gather information and allies for our blooming process.

You can see some of our "before" "during" and "after" hat pictures. Maybe you can see how these hats served as "crowns," just like the hats in the play by the same name. These women each saluted and encouraged each other to be fully themselves, and to live out their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual dreams in full bloom.

If this story appeals to you, consider a renewing retreat this summer at Cimarroncita, in the gorgeous mountains above Taos, New Mexico. Our process will be a bit different, but we will be using childhood photos, our own photos, our creative imaginations and some ancient practices to see ourselves and our possibilities "through a different lens." So here's to your blooming!

"All of them (the activities) worked together in different ways and opened different doors...Thank you for your guidance and for putting this work out there."
  -- Gail S. Brooke

"The Sand Spirits unexpectedly exposed feelings in a trusting environment. The picture and looking at how the girl in the picture would react to my feelings was very profound."
 -- Slivy Edmonds Cotton

AND OUTER LANDSCAPE

This retreat in a stunning landscape provides a unique opportunity to see your life, challenges and possibilities “through a different lens.” In three days you will go through seven levels of perception, exploring each “lens” with disposable cameras, family photographs, journaling exercises, work with the Sand Spirit wisdom cards, and exposure to the shamanic lens of magic, healing and transformation. A small group setting will allow deep conversation, the benefit of sharing and collaboration, fun and plenty of time for solitude and exploration of the surroundings. You’ll have optional time for group movement exercises and art studio time when you can create a modern “retablo” to take home with you. Shamanic Coaching circles:

For those of you who live around Tucson, here is the information about the monthly shamanic coaching circles at my home in Catalina.

These circles have proven to be rich, intimate and powerful explorations into letting go and setting intent in concert with the powers of the fire and the moon.

We gather between 6:30 and 7 for snacks and conversation. We start our circle at 7 by calling in the four directions and creating sacred space. We pass the talking stick and offer thoughts about the topic. Then we share a guided meditation and pass the stick again. Then we process our intention and write something on a piece of paper we'd like to offer to the universe to be transformed, so that the topic can manifest more fully in our lives. We take our papers to the fire and use drums, rattles and chanting to welcome the spirits as we gaze at the moon. Then we return to the circle, where we pass the talking stick once more to offer final thoughts and feelings before closing the directions. Some of us stay for a wine toast before the magical night ends.

This is a powerful way to practice setting your intent and letting go of your blocks and speaking your truth in a small group. You can reserve a place up to 24 hours in advance by calling or emailing. The cost is $25 per session. You can save money by bringing a new person or your partner; then the cost is $20. Or, buy three sessions in advance for $60 and use them any time you wish.

The Spring schedule of shamanic coaching circles:

  • Wednesday, April 12 (changed from the 11th): Rebirth in our Lives
  • Thursday, May 11: The Energy of the Sacred Feminine
  • Wednesday, June 7: The Energy of the Sacred Masculine
