Frequently Asked Questions

Who goes to a shaman and why?
The clients I see in my "life coaching" practice love shamanic energy practices because they accelerate change, and because they fulfill our need for ritual and for being close to the earth. The clients I see as an organizational consultant and trainer are open to working on an energetic level because they know the literal level is not working. They also like connecting our spiritual and work lives and infusing organizations with passion and meaning. The lineage of shamans is dedicated not only to individual healing, but also to healing of the planet.

How do the Sand Spirits work?
A clinical term for the Sand Spirits would be "projectives," images that evoke interpretations we project on to the photograph. Like the Tarot or other decks of cards with forms, the Sand Spirits are rich symbols that make contact with our deeper knowing and with a level of the collective unconscious that goes beyond what we can know on the "normal" mental level.
Projectives are just one example of the ways in which photography can be used therapeutically with all ages, for a wide range of challenges. I have worked with Phototherapy, an international "movement," since the 1970's.
After using the Sand Spirits in my own life and with countless people in both personal and professional settings, I find that they are magic. That is, they have become more powerful the more they have been used. I do not feel I "made" them; I feel they were a gift that I merely recognized, and that their "appearance" was a special event that is still unfolding.

What is the story behind the Sand Spirits?
I discovered the Sand Spirits on a beach on the Pacific side of Baja, Mexico, a few weeks before being diagnosed with breast cancer. The images were powerful symbols in my own healing. As I developed ways of working with them myself, they "told" me that they would like to be used with others, and I followed their "instructions" as I created the materials.

The full story is in the manual, and will be in the workbooks. The Sand Spirits continue to build on their story as people I work with reveal new forms I never saw, new meanings I could never invent, and new reports of the effects the cards have had on their lives and work.

Energy work or energy medicine in the shamanic tradition of the Peruvian Incas involves creating a sacred space and working with the luminous body or energy field to remove entities or energies that are not serving the person, or that are manifesting as symptoms in the physical, emotional or spiritual aspects of life.

Rituals are indigenous practices or primarily non-verbal, symbolic or spiritual practices that can be used to mark passages; to reinforce new ways of being; or to express gratitude and oneness with the universe.

Sand tray work is the therapeutic practice of arranging objects in a tray filled with sand, in order to symbolize and communicate emotions and states of being that may or may not be conscious.

Therapeutic photography, or PhotoTherapy, is the use of photography for learning and human growth and transformation. Photographs taken by the client, owned by the client or chosen by the client can be important ways to "project" unconscious feelings on to an image, or to see oneself and one's life differently.

Journaling involves the use of a personal journal to write about, draw or otherwise keep a record of feelings, events, ideas, dreams, creations that can be important and revealing to the journal keeper.

Guided imagery is the use of the creative imagination to picture, sense or experience energies, events, relationships, dialogues, or journeys that are initiated by the mind, but which can surpass the boundaries of the mind and body.

Tarot cards are ancient cards used for divination and introspection, and I have special training using the major arcana, or most ancient cards in the deck, with clients.

Shamanic circle drawings are useful for seeing what our deeper wisdom says about the work ahead for us in the coming year. The drawing I use is from the Maori shamanic tradition and is used by Angeles Arrien.

Medicine stones are fundamental to the Peruvian shamanic tradition. They are part of my mesa, or medicine bag, and facilitate our seeing and releasing negative energies and taking on more powerful, positive ones.

The Through a Different Lens model for personal and organizational transformation is a series of 7 concentric circles or lenses that correspond to the chakras. They provide a series of 8 steps (including the center) that lead to productive planning and goal setting. They also are reminiscent of the 7 concentric circles at Moray, the temple of the sacred feminine in the highlands of Peru. You will see the photo of Moray on this site.

Illumination is the core energy healing practice I use. With the client lying fully clothed on her back relaxing, I open or unwind one chakra and guide the client to use the breath to release dense energies that we replace with pure white light.

Extraction is a process in which I help the client release more embedded energies that are not serving him by working directly with the energy and helping to dislodge it from the client’s system.

Soul retrieval is a beautiful process of retrieving and integrating a part of our soul or life force that has been exiled or separated from us, usually from a traumatic experience. We journey to the underworld and bring back gifts and soul passions and re-negotiate old contracts. This is a life-changing experience and is usually not done in the first session.
